KUCHING: Imitation items in the form of apparel and unregistered health and cosmetic products were seized during a joint operation at the popular weekend market in Serikin, near the Indonesian border on Saturday.

The operation, led by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) Sarawak, saw a total of 28 imitation T-shirts and 16 health/cosmetic products – totaling RM1,584 – seized from errant traders who were also issued on-the-spot compounds.

The compounds were issued under Section 8(2)(b) of the Trade Descriptions Act 1952 for offering goods with false trade description, as well as Regulation 7(1)(1) of the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984, which states no person shall manufacture, sell, supply, import or possess or administer any product unless the product is a registered product.

A total 72 premises were checked during the operation by KPDNHEP personnel, who were joined by those from the Health Ministry, police and Bau District Council. Leading the operation were KPDNHEP Sarawak chief enforcement officer Md Nawawi Ab Rahman and Ministry of Health pharmacy division deputy director Abu Hassan Alshaari Abd Jabar.

Compounds were also issued for 15 cases under Regulation 3(1) of the Price Control Order (Indication of Price by Retailer) 1993, for failing to place price tags on goods put on display. There were also six cases classified under Section 14(6) of the Weight and Measures Act 1972 for using unverified weighing equipment.
