KUCHING: Nine teams have confirmed their participation in the 3rd Sarawak Open Kabaddi Championship at the MBKS Indoor Stadium in Pending tomorrow.

The competition was jointly organised by the Sarawak Kabaddi Association, the Sarawak Sports Corporation and the Sarawak State Sports Council.

Sarawak head coach Ganisan Punisamy said Federal Terrority of Kuala Lumpur would be sending one boys and one girls team each while Johor will be represented by their boys team.

“As for Sarawak, we have the A team made up of seniors and the B team comprising juniors for the boys while it is the same for the girls with Sarawak A and Sarawak B.

“For the time being, there are six teams in the boys competition namely Federal Terrority of Kuala Lumpur, Johor, Sarawak A, Sarawak B, Young Predator, Kuching Stallions while the teams in the girls competition are Federal Terrority of Kuala Lumpur, Sarawak A and Sarawak B,” said Ganisan.

According to him, the Federal Terrority of Kuala Lumpur boys team would comprise junior and senior players as most of their seniors are now undergoing centralised training with the national squad in preparation for the Asian Games in Indonesia this month.

“Invitations were sent to all states but other teams are not coming due to lack of support from their respective sports councils.

“The organisers have also invited school teams such as SMK Matang Jaya, SMK Green Road, SM Agama Tunas, Sekolah Menengah Seni and SMK St Teresa who have yet to confirm their participation as August 11 is a replacement school day,” added Ganisan.

Competition format is double knock-out for boys and round robin for girls.

Kabaddi enthusiasts are welcome to watch the games at MBKS Stadium where entry is free.
