SARIKEI: A total of 110 teachers and education staff received awards and commendation certificates during the 2017 Sarikei District Education Excellent Award ceremony cum Teacher’s Day celebration at the civic centre here Friday.
Sarikei District Education Officer Radin Fozi Radin Abdul Rahim said that they represented only about 8 per cent of local teachers and education staff.
He said their excellent performance was reflected in the impressive achievement in public examinations and co-curricular activities of students, adding that since the District Education Office embarked on its Education Blueprint 2015-2019, students’ academic and co-curriculum performance have been consistently encouraging.
Last year the District average grade (GPD) in Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination improved to 4.35 from 4.65 in 2016 while in the Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination, Sarikei District emerged second best among 31 districts in the state with GPD of 2.83.
In sports, the district contributed seven of 14 gold medals bagged by Sarawak contingent in 2017 Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) athletics meet during which two athletes from SMK Tinggi Sarikei, Ngu Ing Biao and Grace Wong were respectively named Sport s Boy and Sports Girl of the meet.
Fozi said with the excellent track record, he was confident that their aspiration to see all the 49 schools in the district achieve Transformation School Station would become a reality sooner than expected.
“I believed this can be achieved by 2020 which is five years ahead of the frame time set by the Ministry of Education under its 2013-2025 Blueprint,” he said.
Sarawak Education Department, School Management Sector head Omar Mahli who officiated at the ceremony hoped that local teachers and education staff would keep up their excellent work and strive to improve themselves from time to time.
Prior to the award ceremony, Omar visited a mini exhibition put up by nine primary and four secondary schools on the ground floor of the civic centre.
