25 contingents to take part in Lambir cultural parade

MIRI: Twenty-five contingents will take part in the 2.4km cultural parade that will be the highlight of ‘Mardi Gras Lambir 2018’, taking place at Kampung Tunku Abdul Rahman in Lambir here from Aug 17 to 18.

According to event organising committee chairman Pemanca Wilson Siang Lim, the carnival is the second one being jointly organised for this year by Miri District Iban Community Leaders Group, Residents Committee Zone 1 for Taman Tunku, Sibuti Parliamentary Constituency Service Centre, Lambir Constituency Service Centre, Miri Resident’s Office, Miri District Office and Miri City Council.

Wilson said the carnival was originally planned for May 12-13, but it had to be postponed due to the 14th general election.

Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas has been invited to officiate at the opening ceremony this Aug 18.

The ‘Best Contingent’ of the parade will win RM1,200, while the first and second runner-up will receive RM1,000 and RM800, respectively. Every participating contingent will be given RM100 as consolation, while a special prize will be presented to the ‘Most Creative Contingent’.

In addition, there will also be a beauty pageant, ‘Ratu Mardi Gras Lambir 2018’, which offers RM1,200 for the crowned queen. For the first and second runner-up contestants, they will receive RM1,000 and RM800, respectively. Five finalists will each be given RM100 as consolation.

Earlier yesterday, members of the event organising committee and the villagers conducted a work party to clean and get the venue ready for the carnival.

Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni joined the volunteers.
