MARUDI: The Miri Division-level Sarawak Day celebration was held here for the first time yesterday.

State Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Datuk Gerawat Gala explained that the colonial government handed over power to Sarawak on July 22, 1963.

“So we became an independent nation. Then we participated in forming the Federation of Malaysia together with Malaya, Singapore, and Sabah on Sept 16, 1963,” he said.

The Mulu assemblyman pointed out that it was former Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem who gazetted Sarawak Day as a public holiday in 2016.

“This year is our third year joining the celebration of Sarawak Day.

“The public holiday could bring Sarawakians to celebrate our warriors and independence from the British colonial government so that they understand the challenges and Sarawak’s needs for the future,” he said.

He called on all Sarawakians to continue to fight for Sarawak’s rights and values.
