SIBU: One week of communicating with each other via Facebook was all it took for a local woman to lose over RM30,000 to her ‘friend’.

The 39-year-old victim told police she became acquainted with a person named ‘David Chong’ on Facebook on Aug 2 and had exchanged messages with him for about a week when he said he was going to send her a gift of US currency, jewellery and an expensive wristwatch.

Last Wednesday, she received a phone call from a person claiming to be from a courier company and saying that a parcel in her name had arrived.

However, the parcel had supposedly exceeded the permitted weight limit, meaning she would have to settle the relevant charges before the company could proceed with the delivery.

Without suspecting anything amiss, she proceeded to transfer a total of RM33,550 in six transactions to two account numbers given to her.

Following the transfers, the woman tried to contact ‘David Chong’ but discovered he had already blocked her onFacebook.

Realising the obvious, she lodged a police report. The matter is investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
