KUCHING: Twenty-five members of five families were rendered homeless after fire swept through four townhouse units at Taman Malihah here yesterday afternoon.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sarawak director Nor Hisham Mohammad said the department deployed
23 personnel from the Petra Jaya, Padungan and Batu Lintang fire stations to the scene following a distress call at
2.50pm.

He told reporters at the scene that his men were able to douse the flames at 4.05pm and that there were no reports of injuries or casualties.

“Two units at the upper level of the townhouse were completely destroyed while two adjacent units suffered about 30 per cent in damage,” he said, adding the units beneath the two razed homes sustained some water-related damage from efforts to douse the flames.

According to him, initial investigation revealed the fire started from one of the razed units whose owner was not at home at the time.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, and total loss is also being ascertained, he said, while praising the swift action taken by the public in notifying Bomba of the fire.

Also present at the scene was Tupong assemblyman Fazzruddin Abdul Rahman, who said he will assist the affected families to search for temporary accommodations.

“We will discuss with the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) to temporarily relocate the victims to Taman Dahlia,” he said.
