LAHAD DATU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) rescued a couple who were trapped at Pulah Malundangan due to strong waves, on Sunday.

MMEA district maritime director Lieutenant Commander Radzil Allexender Raphael in a statement yesterday said a search and rescue (SAR) operation was launched by MMEA upon receiving information at 11.57pm on Saturday.

Radzil said they were informed that a fisherman’s boat had capsized at the waters off Pulau Nusa, Kunak at about 11pm.

He said a boat was deployed to the scene to monitor and to launch the SAR operation, but experienced difficulties due to heavy rain and strong waves.

“On Sunday, at 6.30am, we contacted the complainant and were informed that both victims, aged 50 and 53 were safe but trapped at Pulau Malundangan.

“A boat (ADAL 17) was sent to the location to find and rescue the victims. They were taken out from the island at about 8.05am,” he said.

Radzil said the victims were brought to Kunak jetty before they were taken to Kunak Hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, Radzil reminded the public to always obey safety measures while at the sea to avoid any untoward incident.

He also advised the public to contact Lahad Datu MMEA operations centre at 089 885727 for any information or MERS999 for any emergency cases.
