LAHAD DATU: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCom) has set up a new road check point (RCP) at Sapinagoh, Beluran, to serve as an extension of the existing RCP Kalabakan-Sapulut.

Its commander DCP Datuk Hazani Ghazali said several arrests were made during the security inspections carried out at the RCP Kalabakan-Sapulut, thus blocking the route from being used for criminal activities.

“However, there are many existing rat trails as well as new ones,” he said, adding that the trails were used the criminals to avoid security check at the Kalabakan-Sapulut.

“We (ESSCom) identified new rats trails in the forest and oil palm roads that can be accessed by four-wheel drive vehicles,” he said when met by reporters here yesterday.

“Hence, RCP Sapinagoh was established to foil any form of criminal activities including smuggling of goods and illegal immigrants,” he said, adding that RCP Sapinagoh would replace the security check point at Batu 32, Sandakan.

“The implementation of RCP Sapinaguh will be more effective if other relevant authorities including the Malaysian Armed Forces, Road Transport Department, Immigration Department, Customs Department and Forestry Department to participate in the inspections to be carried out at the check points,” he said.

He also said the integrity of ESSCom officers and personnel need to be monitored while carrying out inspections as many parties were against the implementation of RCP Sapinaguh.

“Therefore, I want the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to join us at the check points to monitor this (integrity) aspect,” he said.
