SANDAKAN: The Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre (BSBCC) at Sepilok here was closed for one day yesterday following a storm that had destroyed one of the two platforms at the centre on Monday.

According to the centre’s founder cum chief executive officer, Wong Siew Te, the storm, which hit Sandakan on Monday at about 4.50 pm, had uprooted four big trees and a few smaller trees, some of which fell on platform two of the centre and totally damaging it.

“Fortunately, the staff and the bears were safe.

We are going to keep the bears indoors in the bear house if we see another storm coming in order to keep them safe,” he said.

Wong said the damage was serious and may take quite some time to be fixed. However, platform one of the centre was not affected and will be open today (August 15) to the public.
