KUCHING: A delegation from the Kunming Municipal Public Security Bureau led by deputy director general Yang Jianjun paid a courtesy call on Kuching South Mayor Datuk James Chan yesterday.

This was the first time representatives from China’s Public Security Bureau, which is equivalent to the Royal Malaysia Police, visited Kuching South City Council (MBKS).

In his brief address, Chan said MBKS had previously received courtesy calls from representatives of the municipal councils of friendship cities in China.

He pointed out that the police in Malaysia come under the purview of the federal government and not local councils.

Chan also said MBKS has sought the assistance and collaboration of local police whenever it holds major community events or deals with social problems.

He added that such collaboration has enhanced rapport between MBKS and the police.

Meanwhile, Yang said the delegation hopes to further strengthen ties between friendship cities – Kuching and Kunming – besides gaining a better understanding of Kuching.

Yang added members of the delegation could feel the warmth and friendliness of the city the moment they disembarked at Kuching International Airport.
