MIRI: A message on social media on an attempted kidnapping of a child near a Senadin school proved to be wildly off the mark.

The message, which shows a photograph of a man suspected of committing the offense, appeared on social media yesterday and has gone viral since.

The posting also included the man’s name, identity card number and home address.

It claimed that the incident occurred at a shop in front of the school and the alleged kidnapper had failed in his attempt after the child struggled to get away by shouting and crying, causing a scene.

The message further claimed that the suspect had fled from the scene in a blue Perodua Alza car bearing plate number WD1466E.

When contacted today, Miri police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah dismissed the message, saying it is “fake”.

“The public should be vigilant enough to check with the police for any information on the Internet if they are doubtful,” he added.
