KUCHING: The Sri Aman farmer who contracted Rabies Encephalitis has passed away at Sarawak General Hospital today, bringing the total of human rabies deaths to 11 in the state.

This was confirmed by the Health Ministry director general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah in a statement.

Meanwhile, another patient who is suspected to be rabies-infected has been warded at SGH since August 16. He is a 44-year-old from Jalan Matang. Based on information received, he did not have any history of being bitten by a dog or any animal. However, he did hit a wild dog that had bitten his wife on January 13. He had an open wound on his right hand at that time. The patient did not seek treatment even though he had brought his wife to the hospital for treatment and vaccination. She is currently well.

The man started having pains in his right hand early this month. His condition worsened since August 11, with symptoms of cramp and weakness in his affected hand, inability to move, tenseness at his neck and hydrophobia. Clinical tests have been conducted to determine his illness.
