RRSS, RIT contribute to Tabung Harapan to celebrate Merdeka Month

Staff and students of RRSS and RIT wave the national flag as they sing Jalur Gemilang.

MIRI: Riam Road Secondary School (RRSS) and Riam Institute of Technology (RIT) here made donations to Tabung Harapan on Friday in conjunction with the launching of Merdeka Month.

According to a press release yesterday, RRSS Prefects Board raised RM3,102.35 while RIT Student Council and Leo Club raised RM547.20 through a donation drive among students and staff.

RRSS head prefect Yong Xu Cheng, RIT Student Council vice-president Leong Van Jet and RIT Leo Club president Angeline Tiong Yii Hui shared a famous quote by John F. Kennedy at his inaugural address, “ … ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”

They added that the collected amount may not be big but they are proud to do a small part for their beloved Malaysia.

Meanwhile, the Merdeka Month celebration was jointly organised by RRSS Humanities Department and Bahasa Malaysia Department.

To highlight the importance of the country’s official language, the department organised singing of patriotic songs and recitation of poems in Bahasa Malaysia for the launching ceremony.

There was also a fashion show featuring students in traditional costumes of the various races in Malaysia.
