MIRI: Environmental activist and avid runner Andreas Bussinger and his Trans Borneo Run team arrived here Saturday from Brunei after a journey of about 650km which started in Kudat – the Tip of Borneo.
During his short stop here, the 28-year-old German and his team took part in a cleaning campaign at Marina Beach yesterday organised by a local non-governmental organisation (NGO).
“Borneo is certainly an incredible place that one could never find elsewhere. Similar to other Asian countries I’ve visited, rubbish washed ashore from the sea is one of the most difficult issues that human population must overcome.
“While education is important to nurture the idea of protecting the environment, the mentality of the community is of vital importance. Thus, when I embarked on this running journey, I’ve learnt that it cannot be done with the effort of a person or a group of people, but by changing the system,” he told The Borneo Post.
Bussinger hopes that to meet more Sarawakians NGOs and individuals to share ideas on various issues during his time around Borneo.
“After Miri, we will continue our journey to Bintulu, Sibu, Kuching, with our final stop in Pontianak (Indonesia),” he added.
