NIOSH introduces SHO for IPT programme to reduce workplace accidents

SIBU: The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has introduced a special initiative for future workers pursuing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to help reduce workplace accidents.

“Known as Safety and Health Officer for Institution of Higher Learning or SHO for IPT programme, it allows TVET students to obtain professional competency certificate while pursuing their studies in IPT,” announced NIOSH chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye through a media statement here yesterday.

“SHO for IPT programme will be 100 per cent handled by NIOSH and conducted at IPT premises to minimize cost and maintain its quality,” Lee added.

He explained further that NIOSH will also organise workshops for examination preparation and prepare four full examination papers for the programme.

This new initiative will help increase the number of workers with skills in occupational safety and health (OSH) to serve the OSH needs of industries.

According to Lee, it will also benefit employers to have young workers equipped with OSH knowledge and certificates.

“This programme is part of NIOSH’s efforts to empower future workers and help reduce workplace accidents in the country,” he said.
