SIBU: The use of smartphone IPeople application is one of the many initiatives that the local authorities (LAs) are embarking to enhance their service delivery.

Assistant Minister of Local Government Datu Dr Penguang Manggil said: “As I have mentioned many times in the media before, the LAs are the third level of our government administration and the closest to the people and hence, whatever they can or cannot do reflect the efficiency of entire government machinery.

“Therefore, it is incumbent upon the LAs to continuously improve our delivery system to meet the demand of the modern day society.”

He added: “Besides process re-engineering and standardising and harmonising the structure, system, processes and the people (human resource), the LAs have also computerised many business processes and are now developing a number
of apps in stages beginning with the city and municipal councils…to facilitate and to shorten the business processes for the public.”

The Marudi assemblyman said this yesterday when asked to comment on how soon other local councils in Sarawak were expected to be installed with this smart app, following Minister of Housing and Local Government Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian’s recent statement that he was very keen to extend the use of IPeople application to all local councils because ‘talian khidmat’ service was very slow to respond, and sometimes there was no reply at all.

According to Dr Sim, IPeople application would enable the people to make complaints, pay assessment rates and other services.

Dr Sim also said extending the use of smartphone IPeople application to all local councils is necessary because the majority (80 per cent) of complaints to ‘talian khidmat’ are issues related to local councils.
