KUCHING: The Sarawak Sukma XIX hockey teams swept the men’s and women’s titles of the Kuching Festival Six-A-Side Hockey Tournament that ended at the Sarawak Hockey Stadium along Jalan Padungan yesterday.

In the men’s competition, which saw the participation of 10 teams, Sukma C emerged the champions after beating Sukma B 1-0 in the final through a field goal by Mohd Izzat Afifi Mahmod in the sixth minute.

Besides trophies and medals, Sukma B collected RM500 while the losing finalists received RM300 in cash prizes.

The play-off for third and fourth placings saw Sukma A blanking Excalibur HT 2-0. Each team pocketed RM100.

Other men’s teams were Tebakang A, KHC B, Falcon Hockey Team, KHC A, Tebakang B and GP Hockey Team.

The four-team women’s competition, which was played on a round robin league format was won by Sukma A who collected seven points from two wins and one draw while Sukma B had five points from one win and two draws.

KHC A were third with four points while winless KHC B finished last.

The champions and runners-up received RM500 and RM300 while the third and fourth placed teams each received RM100.

The tournament was organised by Kuching City South Council (MBKS) with technical support from the Hockey Association of Sarawak in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of the Kuching City.

MBKS mayor Dato James Chan Khay Syn gave away the prizes. Among those present were MBKS deputy mayor Hilmi Othman, organising chairman Mulok Saban and HAS secretary Kangot Awan.
