Biggest seizure of counterfeit goods in Sibu this year – KPDNHEP

SIBU: Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) office here made the biggest seizure of counterfeit items for this year, when they confiscated 196 units of handbags and wallets.

KPDNHEP Sibu branch chief Roslee Maslie disclosed that the seized goods are suspected to be counterfeit and valued at RM25,577.30.

“Yesterday (Tuesday), our enforcement teams and the trademark owners raided three premises at shopping centres here.

“The raids were made following complaints by the trademark owners. This is the second case involving counterfeit goods with the biggest seizure amount in Sibu this year. All three premises are suspected to have flouted Section 8(2)(b) of Trade Descriptions Act 2011.

“We acted on the first case here involving sports items in January this year,” he told a press conference here this afternoon.

Roslee said the case is now being investigated under Section 8(2)(b) of Trade Descriptions Act 2011.

On the penalty, he said: “Upon conviction, if that person is a  body corporate, to a fine not exceeding fifteen thousand ringgit for each goods bearing the false trade description, and for a second or subsequent offence, to a fine not exceeding thirty thousand ringgit for each goods bearing the false trade description; or

“Upon conviction, if that person is not a body corporate, to a fine not exceeding ten thousand ringgit for each goods bearing the false trade description or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three years or to both, and for a second or subsequent offence, to a fine not exceeding twenty thousand ringgit for each goods bearing the false trade description, or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years or to both.”
