Women’s rugby team eyeing Sukma gold

The state men’s and women’s teams in high spirit as they look eagerly to do well in next month’s Sukma XIX in Perak.

KUCHING: Sarawak are determined to pose a strong challenge for the gold medal in the women’s seven-a-side rugby competition of the 19th Sukan Malaysia (Sukma) in Perak next month.

They are one of the nine teams vying for top honours in the competition which will be held at the Perak Rugby Mini Stadium, MBI Sports Complex, Ipoh from Sept 15 to 16.

Sarawak will be represented by new faces from Kuching, Samarahan, Sibu, Mukah and Miri. Mounting the challenge are Cindy John Pasan, Daphne Dayang Dennis, Edythe Jayne Donny, Elizianna Robert Goh, Erina Tasha Rajis, Jessira Priesca Ngumbang, Josie Mavcellina Gone, Khairunnisa Abdullah, Lau Geok Moi, Nicole David, Rachel Ashley Jukie and Rosani Erline Lasa.

They are drawn in Group C with Terengganu and Johor.

Managing the women’s team is Faqrul Hafiz Abu Bakar while the coaches are Sylvia Alexander Lian and Muhammad Fahmi Ibrahim.

The men’s contest will see 14 teams in the fray and Sarawak will play in Group B together with Selangor, Pahang and Kuala Lumpur.

The players, who come from Kuching, Samarahan, Sibu and Mukah, had been selected earlier this year.

They are Amir Izzuddin Masle, Anthony Lawai Jok, Elvin Wong Khiing Jiun, Muhammad Imran Idznirosdin, Muhammad Syukri Borhman, Muhd Nur Haqim Raden, Ruzaini Mohammad, Samuel Rentap Meran, Spencer Tony, Yoshua Semuil and Zulfadhli Marthin Suhor.

Abdul Ghafar Arshad is the team manager while the coaches are Nacani Seniu and Ting Tung Ngie. The assistant chef-de-mission for rugby is Layar assemblyman Gerald Rentap Jabu.
