KUCHING: Former senior minister Tan Sri William Mawan has rubbished rumour that he would be joining Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR).

He said as far as he was concerned, he was a Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) man and there shouldn’t be any speculation of him jumping ship.

The Pakan assemblyman said there also shouldn’t be any doubt on his membership in GPS or presence in GPS meeting.

“I come to the meeting because I am a GPS man and there shouldn’t be any doubt when I am around.

“Why should people look at me differently? Don’t look at me differently,” he said when approached by reporters after attending the meeting with Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg at a leading hotel here torday.

He was asked to comment on speculations that he might be joining Pakatan Harapan following some allegations that he had helped a PKR candidate during the campaign in the last parliamentary elections.

Mawan had revealed in March that that he has been a Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) member since 2016 after his political affiliation was questioned prior the last parliamentary elections.

He was president of Progressive Democratic Party (PDP), a component of the then state Barisan Nasional (BN) before he became pro-BN Parti Tenaga Rakyat Sarawak (Teras).

He had won the Saratok as PDP president in 2013 before retaining the Pakan seat in the 2016 state election as BN’s direct candidate.

However, he was not fielded to defend Saratok in the last parliamentary election, giving way to entrepreneur Subeng Mula, which the latter eventually lost to Ali Biju from PKR.
