SERIAN: DAP Serian branch members and supporters are taking part in a ‘gotong royong’ (work party) to provide a better home for a poor family in Kampung Koran Plaman near here.

Branch chairman Edward Andrew Luwak said they started the work party last weekend to  repair and improve the house of Lina Nanus. However, the work was not completed although the first ‘gotong royong’ had involved 30 DAP members and supporters and 10 volunteers.

“The team will organise another day of ‘gotong royong’, tentatively on Sept 9, to complete the work and then hopefully we can give Lina and children a more decent home.

“However we will need some assistance in kind, namely 300 pieces of hollow cement brick to replace the wooden wall of the kitchen and to replace the leaking roof of the kitchen, toilet and wash area. Some 20 pieces of
14-foot roofing sheets costing about RM70 each will be required,” he said.

He explained that Lina’s husband Kimpui Buki died early this year after a long fight with cancer. The late Kimpui was a farmer and the sole bread winner.

He also said that Kimpui was given a small amount of welfare assistance in his final years. The assistance ended with his death.

“Lina is not receiving any welfare assistance. Before cancer struck, the late Kimpui started building a house. The house was never completed as his health deteriorated,” he said.

He revealed that Lina now lives with her daughter who works as a coffee shop assistant in Serian town and two other children who are still schooling. Her eldest daughter has married and is living with her own family in the same village.
