No plans yet to bar foreign vehicles with unpaid summonses from leaving Sarawak — Ministry of Transport

MIRI: The Ministry of Transport has no plans presently to bar foreign vehicles with unsettled summonses from Brunei and Indonesia from leaving the country under the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) system soon.

Currently, the VEP only applies to vehicles from Singapore under which vehicles from that country entering Malaysia are charged RM20 each.

This was relayed to The Borneo Post by a spokesman of the ministry yesterday when asked for clarification on whether the ban also applies to foreign vehicles from Brunei and Indonesia entering and leaving Sarawak.

On Monday, Transport Minister Anthony Loke had said foreign vehicles with unsettled traffic summonses would be barred from leaving Malaysia, and the move would start when the country implements the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) system at its borders starting this year.

He also said the ministry would be considering multiple approaches to be used including registering them under VEP, so that when the system is implemented vehicles with unsettled summonses cannot leave the country.

Loke conceded that the VEP system takes time to be implemented but said his ministry would still pursue it as the way forward.
