Sarawak senior golfers take the lead in Damai

SANTUBONG: Sarawak led the team gross and nett categories on the first day of the 11th Pan Borneo Senior Amateur Open Golf Championship at Damai Golf and Country Club here yesterday.

Based on the best scores of the 10 players in the team, Sarawak led the gross contest with 832 strokes through Tan Chek Khan, Hoan Kee Hock, Anthony Tan Hong Chiang, Thomas Tang, Abdul Aziz Sahari, Philip Osen Nichol, Kenny Law Keng Yang, Chai Kuet Leong, Ahmad Hamdan and Yakop Jalel.

Last year’s overall champion Brunei were second with 836 strokes while Sabah were third with 840.

The team nett category saw Sarawak accumulating 699 strokes through Dillah Ahmad, Robert Elone Sireng, Andrew Tok Jiak Yong, Louis Yong Lin Lin, Yeo Kim Tiong, Edwin Hong Ming Seng, Leong Chin Hin, David Loh Man Dee, Chiam Chan Naw and Senior Golfers Society of Sarawak president Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam to lead Brunei by nine strokes while Sabah were third with 721 strokes.

Meanwhile, Donni Intung led the individual gross category when he carded the day’s score of three-over 75, finishing a stroke ahead of Col Dato Harith Karim and another stroke ahead of Suhaidi Jahim.

The fourth to 10th position were occupied by Tan Chek Kian (80), Hong Kok Seng (80), Alfred Sim (81), Hoan Kee Hock (81), Anthony Tan (81), Patera Madil (82) and Thomas Tang (83).

Dillah Ahmad returned a 65 to take a two-stroke lead over Datuk Claudius Roman in the individual nett category, followed by Boljen Majingin in third place with 68 strokes.

Those finishing in fourth to 10th positions were Philip Osen Nichol (68), Kenny Law Keng Yang (68), Tham Yen Enn (69), Datuk Juanis @Joannes Solidau (69), Dato Bahrain Md Noor (70), Robert Elone Sireng (70) and Datuk Verus A Sham (70) respectively.

The competition continues today with the players playing another round of 18 holes.

A total of 128 players are taking part in this event hosted by the Senior Golfers Society of Sarawak.

After the game, there was a welcoming dinner at DGCC Saujana Hall hosted by former deputy chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri George Chan.

The participants were treated to a performance by the Sarawak Cultural Village.
