Man pleads not guilty to keeping stolen properties

MIRI: A man pleaded not guilty in a magistrate’s court yesterday to eight charges of being in possession of 10 stolen Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) electricity meter readers.

Sim Lei Yean, 40, from Taman Ceria, Permyjaya, faces eight charges under Section 411 of the Penal Code, and could be jailed up to five years or fined or both on conviction.

For the first charge, Sim was accused of illegally receiving a stolen electricity meter reader belonging to SEB, which was installed for one Yap Tai Yean.

He allegedly committed the offence at 11am on Aug 27 at a lot in Jalan Episcia 1, MDL Garden here.

For the second charge, he was accused of illegally keeping a stolen SEB meter reader worth RM500, which was under the care of Chow Chian Lee, 56. He allegedly committed the offence with another person still at large, at 11am on Aug 27, at a lot in Jalan Episcia 1, MDL Garden here.

For the third charge, Sim was accused of illegally keeping a stolen SEB electricity meter worth RM500, which was under the care of Lee Jin Yen, 23. He allegedly committed the offence at 11am on Aug 28, at a lot in Jalan Episcia 1, MDL Garden here.

For the fourt and fifth charges, he was accused of being in possession of three stolen SEB electricty meter readers, which were under the care of Mohamad @ Fuad Saar and two units worth RM1,000 belonging to Lahung Usat. Both offences were allegedly committed at 11am on Aug 27 at the same place.

For the sixth charge, Sim was accused of illegally keeping a stolen electricity meter reader worth RM150, which was placed under the care of Hii Nai Tai, 53. He allegedly committed the offence with another person still at large, at the same time and place.

For the seventh charge, Sim was accused of illegally receiving one stolen SEB electricity meter reader worth RM500 belonging to Ling Ming Kiong.

For the last charge, he was accused of committing similar offence – in posession of two electricity meter readers, which were placed under the care of Han Deng Yuen, 38.

The eight cases were read separately to the accused, and after he pleaded not guilty, the court set Oct 3 for case management.

Sim was then ordered to be released on RM500-bail with two sureties for each of the charges, while waiting for the case to be heard.

Insp Mohd Khairi Mohd Noor and ASP Mary Ong prosecuted in Magistrate Zuraini Ali Musa’s court, while the accused was represented by Ranbir Singh.
