ENGKILILI: The people should work together with the Sarawak government to defend the state’s rights for the survival of future generations, according to Engkilili assemblyman Dr Johnichal Rayong Ngipa.

“We are talking about Sarawak’s rights that have been eroded and, more unfortunately, taken without our willingness. Everyone must rally behind the Sarawak government headed by Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg, who is someone who truly champions Sarawak’s rights,” he said when speaking at a ‘Leader Meets the People’ event at Rumah Kundang Juyu, Berengang here on Sunday.

The Sarawak government needs strong support when dealing the federal government, something which is currently more difficult as two governments are not of the same coalition, he added.

Rayong told those at the event that the Sarawak government is still working on securing 20 per cent in oil and gas royalties from the federal government and should it succeed in doing so, the state will have enough money to finance all its projects, especially in rural areas.

“The people should also reject the presence of external parties and parties who only take advantage of Sarawakians. Only Sarawak-based parties can understand the needs of the rural community.”

During the event, Rayong announced minor rural project grants for Rumah Kundang Juyu in the form of RM5,000 to its village security and development committee and another RM3,000 to the its women bureau.

He also pledged to repair the roof of longhouse and to build a church for the villagers soon.
