KOTA KINABALU: The state government will identify several areas for the construction of dams to ensure adequate water supply in Sabah in the next 50 years, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal.

He said to implement the dam construction, a comprehensive study would be carried out in three locations, namely Tambunan, Papar and Kota Belud.

“We are aware the proposed construction at Kaiduan, Papar has problems. Hence we will identify several areas and settle any problems concerning water supply shortage for future generations,” he said.

He was speaking at the closing of the Malaysia Day forum, organised by the United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (UPKO) here yesterday.

Also present was UPKO acting president Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau.

Commenting on the forum, Mohd Shafie said the forum was very timely as a platform to express opinions in discussing documents such as the Malaysia Agreement 1963.

“I hope this forum will continue in the future because it is crucial for us to know what is enshrined in the document,” he said.

He said the new Sabah government helmed by the Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) would ensure Sabah’s rights would continue to be safeguarded.

Meanwhile Madius said the forum, held annually for the last five years in conjunction with Malaysia Day, aimed at public understanding of the contents of documents such as MA63.

“Through this forum, we can see how the government is implementing MA63…we need to know that MA63 is a document registered with the United Nations and the contents enshrined within are very valid,” he added. — Bernama
