KOTA KINABALU: Efforts must be intensified when confronted with security issues, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Mohd Shafie Apdal.

He said this in light of the recent kidnapping incident involving two Indonesian fishermen, who were reportedly taken by several armed men near Gaya Island off Semporna waters, Tuesday morning.

It is not an incident to be taken lightly, said Shafie, emphasising that it occurred within the State border, hence the need for necessary actions.

“I am confident the responsible agencies are in touch with our Indonesian counterparts.

“Knowing that there is some instability in some areas down south, it’s important for us to be mindful that we have to intensify our efforts, double the surveillance and intelligence here, to ensure we will be in the know,” he said.

On the morning of September 11, two fishermen were reported to have been kidnapped by armed men, while two others managed to get away. The latter two then reported the incident to authorities.

This is noted to be the first kidnapping incident in almost two years.
