KUCHING: Kampung Masjid here has been selected as the venue for the state-level World Cleanup Day this Saturday.

The global event is a social action programme aimed at combating the global solid waste problem, including the problem of marine debris, and will see millions of volunteers from 150 countries unite to clean up the world over a 24-hour period.

Chief Assistant Director of the State Services Modernisation Unit under the Chief Minister’s Department, Dolhadi Marzuki said the campaign here will be officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“We hope Kuchingites will come and join us for this campaign. We need to educate ourselves, the people around us and the community as a whole on the importance of a clean environment and clean air, to make this world a better place to live in,” he said after chairing a committee briefing at the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) office here, yesterday.

He added that at the same time, the objective of the state-level campaign is to emphasise the usage of digital technology in line with the Sarawak government’s push towards digital economy.

The Sarawak edition of World Cleanup Day is an initiative by Josipa Alumni 82 Association, with Sarawak Multimedia Authority as the main sponsor.

The highlight of the campaign will be a live-stream of events from Kampung Masjid through Skype and Facebook, to several locations including Telaga Air and City Square in Kuching, as well as to Miri and Bekenu.
