The Sarawak futsal team finished second in Group C and advanced to the knockout round.

IPOH: Sarawak are through to the men’s futsal quarterfinals after Melaka defeated Kedah 3-2 in their final Group C match at Manjung Indoor Sports Arena.

Melaka won the group with six points, followed by Sarawak (three points) and Kedah.

Sarawak were made to wait for the last eight status after losing their last group match to Kedah 2-4 two days ago.

Head coach Ahmad Media Sharkawi said it was worth the wait and relieved that the team have made the cut.

“We had hoped for a 0-0 draw between Melaka and Kedah today. However, Melaka succeeded in registering a 3-2 win which ensured of our slot in the quarterfinals,” he said.

According to the coach, the boys were overjoyed upon learning the outcome and they are gearing up for the challenge in the next stage of the competition.

“We have yet to know our quarterfinals opponents, it could be Terengganu or Pahang.

“We do not want to think about it at the moment but will instead focus on our strategy for the quarterfinals,” he said.

Ahmad added that the knockout round is a totally different challenge and would take extra caution in devising strategies for the match, which will kick off on Monday.
