Sarawak bowlers sweep both doubles golds

IPOH: Sarawak bounced back in style at Ampang Superbowl here last night by making a clean sweep of the men’s and women’s doubles gold medals.

National youth bowler Gillian Lim made up for her disappointment in the women’s singles on Friday where she missed the gold medal by 15 pins. She felled 1,218 pins and her partner Nur Hazirah Ramli also had a good game of 1,080 pins for a total of 2,298 pins to take the gold yesterday.

Coming in second place 43 pins behind were Nur Amirah Auni Azman and Anis Shazlin Zilkhisham of Penang while Siti Nurzulaika Ismail and Siti Nurnadia Ismail from Kuala Lumpur settled for the bronze with 2,231 pins.

In the men’s doubles, the winning combination of Christopher Tiong Lee Siong (1,189) and Abang Afiq Yazid Abang Azman (1,316) collected a total of 2,505 pins to top the field.

The silver medalists were Muhammad Azizi Naim Jabar and Asri Wafiq Hussin of Selangor with 2,417 pins while Muhammad Al Qayyum and Syafiq Noor Akmal of Negeri Sembilan took the bronze medal with 2,382 pins.

Two more golds will be contested in the mixed doubles today.

Meanwhile, at the Perak Rugby Field, MBI Sports Complex here, Sarawak booked their place in the quarterfinals of the men’s rugby after scoring two wins and one defeat in Group B yesterday.

The team coached by Nacani Seniu opened their campaign with a 12-7 win over Kuala Lumpur with Anthony Lawai Jok scoring two tries for 10 points while Ruzaini Mohamad made one conversion for two points.

Sarawak went on to edge Pahang 19-17 with Anthony scoring a try and conversion while Elvin Wong Khiing Jiun and Muhd Nur Haqim Raden had a try each.

In the final group match against Selangor in the afternoon, however, Sarawak lost 7-24.

In the women’s competition, Sarawak overpowered Terengganu 21-5 for their first victory in the group stage.

Khairunnisa was the team’s inspiration with two tries and conversions while Cindy John Pasan had one try and substitute Elizianna Robert Goh made one conversion.

The team then registered their second win by beating Johor 12-7 and also booked their ticket in the last eight.

Sarawak won a cycling bronze when Nur Azrenna Ahmad Jumry collected 14 points in the women’s criterium 50km race at Taman Tasik Taiping. The gold and silver went to Terengganu’s Nur Aisyah Mohamad Zubir and Ezzatie Fifiyana Shazwanie Shaiful Hisham who collected 36 points and 21 points respectively.

As at 9.30pm yesterday, Terengganu top the medal tally with 13 gold while Penang and Federal Territory have 12 each. Sarawak have collected a total of six gold medals in the 2018 Sukma so far.
