KOTA KINABALU: Minister of Economic Affairs Datuk Seri Mohd Azmin Ali will be looking at strengthening security in Sabah.

He said that he had discussed the matter at length with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal and stressed that the safety of the state and its people must be prioritised.

“I do not want to see a repeat of the recent abduction case as this will affect the state’s tourism industry, its economic growth and the rakyat’s safety,” he said during a dinner with PKR members in Penampang on Saturday night.

Azmin said he will be discussing with the responsible quarters including the Home Ministry with regards to the matter so that proactive action can be implemented as soon as possible to ensure the safety of Sabah’s east coast.

On his visit to Sabah, Azmin said that it was not only to campaign for the party’s election, in which he is going for the deputy president’s post, but also to share the priorities of how to strengthen the working relationship between the state and federal governments.

“I had a long discussion with the Chief Minister and I am glad he is looking forward to strengthening our ties,” he said.

He also said that people in Sabah are looking forward to the good understanding between the state and federal governments as well as more development coming into the state.

On the Pan Borneo highway, Azmin said that the project will continue as it is beneficial and can spur the economic growth of Sabahans and Sarawakians.

“But in the briefing on Friday (by UPEN Sabah), they expressed some concerns about the process which is not transparent. I will bring the matter up at the federal level so that there will be transparency in the process,” he said.
