MIRI: Over 20 personnel under the 31st Infantry Brigade are taking part in the second Borneo Expedition which kicked off at the Sungai Tujuh Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex here yesterday.

The 720km expedition will end at Tawau Sports Complex, Sabah and is expected to take six days to complete.

Additionally, 28 cyclists from the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) will also join the event throughout the Brunei route.

The expedition was flagged off by Malaysia’s Defence Adviser in Brunei Colonel Kamarudzaman Mohd Thani, representing 31st Infantry Brigade commander Major General Dato Fadzil Tajuddin who inspired the expedition.

Kamarudzaman prepares to sound the air horn to launch the cycling expedition.

According to Lt Colonel Rokaib Ahmad of Battalion 7, Border Regiment – this year’s expedition organiser – the event aims to introduce the 31st Infantry Brigade to the locals as well as to foster closer friendship between the Malaysian Armed Forces and RBAF.

“This is a continuity of last year’s Kenyalang Expedition programme, which started here (Miri) and ended in Kuching.

“This year’s expedition will end in Tawau, with the route divided into six sectors namely Miri-Limbang, Limbang-Sipitang, Sipitang-Keningau, Keningau-Sapulut, Sapulut-Kalabakan, and Kalabakan-Tawau,” he said.

Rokaib added the expedition is also being held in conjunction with Malaysia Day and the Malaysian Armed Forces Day.
