KUCHING: It is possible for the federal government to give state rights back to Sabah and Sarawak based on the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report 1962 findings, said Assistant Minister of Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali.

“The IGC Report is very clear, it has to be read with Federal Constitution, that cannot be simply be ignored, the terms and conditions, it can be done without going through Parliamentary amendment. They can, if they want to,” she said.

Hasidah pointed out that returning the status of Sabah and Sarawak as equal partners to Peninsular Malaysia will not be a big issue if the Pakatan Harapan federal government is serious and sincere about doing so.

She also believed that getting the two-third majority in Parliament to amend the law can be done.

“I am sure Sabah and Sarawak will fully support, and Pakatan Harapan (PH) elected representative will abide with Prime Minister’s decision under the whip system. If PM said vote, they will vote,” she said.

Hasidah, however, questioned the proposal to conduct another study.

“What study, what more (to) study? We have formed a team, we went to London, the Malaysia Agreement is there, it has to be recognised. Sabah and Sarawak rights must be recognised,” she stressed.
