PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) yesterday arrested former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak over a 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) case involving the alleged deposit of RM2.6 billion into his personal account.
The arrest was made at 4.13pm at the MACC headquarters here, the MACC said in a statement.
The MACC said Najib would face several charges under Section 23(1) of the MACC Act 2009.
It said the former prime minister would be charged in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court today.
The MACC said it would collaborate with the Royal Malaysia Police to record a statement from Najib to assist the police investigation under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism
Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 before taking him to court today.
Najib had reportedly arrived at the MACC headquarters at about 3pm after the MACC requested his presence to have a statement recorded in relation to the case.
About 20 reporters waiting at the compound of the MACC building failed to catch Najib entering the premises.
The former prime minister had been charged previously on seven counts.
On July 4, he pleaded not guilty in the Kuala Lumpur High Court to three charges of criminal breach of trust and one charge of abuse of power involving funds amounting to RM42 million belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd.
On Aug 8, he pleaded not guilty in the Kuala Lumpur High Court to three charges of having received RM42 million in proceeds from unlawful activities into two of his accounts four years ago, with the money belonging to SRC International Sdn Bhd. — Bernama
