KUCHING: Minister of International Trade and E-Commerce Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh says he will continue to seek advice from former minister of international trade and industry Datuk Seri Mustapa Muhamed despite his decision to leave Umno.

He said Mustapa, fondly known as Tok Pa, was one of the most experienced and capable ministers he had come across.

“It’s a pity we have lost Datuk Seri Mustapa who has quit Umno.

“To me, he is one of the most experienced and capable ministers, particularly in the international trade and commerce. He is also very knowledgeable and hardworking,” he said during his ministry’s high-tea session with members of the media at the Old Courthouse here yesterday.

Wong, nevertheless, said he would continue to approach Mustapa for advice especially in regards to issues concerning international trade and commerce.

“I will go back from time-to-time to seek his advice in our private capacity, if not officially. I believe he is ever ready to assist.”

On Tuesday, Mustapa announced his resignation from Umno after more than 40 years with the party.

The Jeli MP said in a statement that his decision to leave was mainly due to the party’s current direction being no longer in line with his political principles.

He said for Umno to remain relevant, it could not rely solely on the support from the Malays and Bumiputeras.
