SEREMBAN: Rukun Tetangga (RT) leaders play a very big role in boosting the spirit of volunteerism, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (National Unity and Social Wellbeing) Senator P Waytha Moorthy.

He said their task of looking after a community area and holding neighbourhood activities was based on their desire for peace in their areas.

“In addition, they also bear the responsibility of looking after the safety of the local community by conducting night patrols on a voluntary basis and looking after public amenities.

“In fact, if there are any misunderstandings between neighbours, the RT leaders will be the mediators,” he said at a gathering with Negeri Sembilan RT here Wednesday night.

The text of his speech was read out by Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (National Unity and Social Wellbeing) Dr Md Farid Md Rafik.

He said the task and role of the RT committee chairman and members was to foster the spirit of neighbourliness, wellbeing and quality of life which was important for national unity.

Negeri Sembilan has 373 RT, as well as 12 RT coordinating committees. — Bernama
