MIRI: Social Security Organisation (Socso) here has paid out RM2.3 million in compensation claim involving 404 accidents as of August this year to members and beneficiaries.

Its Miri manager Griffin Francis Manggie said the amount included various benefits such as injuries sustained during work, (hospital) treatment expenses, invalidity and death.

“Socso has been going door-to-door to identify companies still not complying with the various Socso Acts, through Ops Kesan carried out in July,” Griffin told the press when Pujut assemblyman Dr Ting Tiong Choon visited him at his office here yesterday morning. DAP Miri youth chief Peter Hii was also present Griffin added that the operation netted 33 companies and individuals for not registering their workers with Socso, and were compounded.

Compounds amounting to RM23,000 were collected from them with amounts ranging from RM500 to RM2,000.

From the 33 cases, 27 were charged under Section 4 of the Socso Acts for their failure to register their companies and the rest under Section 5 of the same Acts for failure to register their employees.

On Socso scheme for taxi drivers, Griffin said they had met with members of the taxi associations here to ask them to get the Self-Employed Employment Injury Scheme ‘but the response was rather poor’.

“Only seven out of the over 100 taxi drivers here are registered under the scheme.”

Dr Ting, meanwhile, called on drivers of taxis, Grabs cars and other individual drivers to register with the Socso scheme ‘for peace of mind’.

Later, he helped to present cheques to five Socso members/beneficiaries.

They were Nur Rasidah Raine, Catherine Marikan, Cecelia Ngau, Walter Ayub Lasung and Dustan Garai.
