Miri weightlifter bags two golds, breaks Sukma snatch record

TAPAH: Sarawak’s strongman Jerry Gawan overcame a palm injury yesterday to crack the men’s above 105kg category snatch record at Dewan Merdeka, Tapah District Council.

Jerry, 18, from Miri heaved 143kg in his second attempt on the last day of the competition to break the record of 140kg by Md Saufik Ahmad set in the 2008 Sukma in Terengganu.

He beat his challenger, Mohamad Alif Haiman Othman of Kelantan who cleared 142kg for the silver medal.

Jerry also bagged the clean and jerk gold medal with a load of 176kg in the same category.

The silver medal went to Mohamad Alif Haiman who lifted 170kg while Federal Territories weightlifter Ndri Saparuddin won both bronze medals with 146kg (clean and jerk) and 139kg (snatch).

Jerry, the third in a family of four siblings, dedicated his golden feats to his mother Mariam Enjok who is celebrating her 43rd birthday this month.

Sarawak rounded up their campaign in weightlifting in seventh place overall with two gold, four silver and six bronze while Kuala Lumpur dominated with nine gold, one silver and four bronze medals.

Pencak silat also contributed one gold through Syed Mohd Faiz Saiyid Abdillah who won the men’s Class Bebas (85-110kg).

Amber Francesca Naja Edwin claimed her third gold in archery when she partnered Esther Yong Yin Ze and Kho Yee Ting to win the women’s compound team with 223 points against Kedah’s 223 points in the final.

The men’s team comprising Chio Chung Yin, Ngu Gao Teck and Ting Kee Wei missed the bronze by two points when they lost to the Terengganu team 227-229 in the shoot off for third/fourth placings. — Bernama (Additional reporting by Ting Tieng Hee)
