Upcycle Ocean Trash competition attracts 22 schools

MIRI: The Upcycle Ocean Trash Competition 2018 held at Coco Cabana Miri recently saw the participation of students from 20 secondary and two primary schools.

The competition was jointly organised by Malaysia Nature Society Miri branch, Miri Local Agenda 21 (LA 21) of Miri City Council (MCC), Pustaka Miri, Coco Cabana Miri, Northern Sarawak Journalists Association (NSJA) as well as three Junior Chamber International (JCI) Chapters for Miri, Riam and Lutong.

According to the organising spokesperson, the most entries were received from secondary schools (20) and one entry each from SK Bintang and SK Sri Mawar.

Among the secondary schools which took part in the competition were SMK Luar Bandar Miri, SMK Chung Hua Miri, SMK Merbau Miri, SMK Baru Miri, SMK Lutong, SMK Riam and Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang.

The competition themed ‘Wonders of Sarawak’ required the students to build replicas of Sarawak landmarks using trash collected from the beaches here.

“All the replicas produced by the students are displayed at Coco Cabana Miri for a week.

“Prize presentation ceremony has been scheduled on Oct 19 at 2pm at the same venue with Miri mayor Adam Yii invited to officiate at the event,” the spokesperson added.

The champion will receive RM500 while the second and third place winners will take home RM300 and RM200 respectively. Winners will also receive trophies and certificate of participation. There will also be five consolation prizes of RM100 each.

Participants will also stand a chance to win two special prizes – RM250 and certificates for Environmental Sustainability MNS Miri and RM200 for Public Jury Award.
