SIBU: The OSH@TVET programme aims to provide early exposure on occupational safety and health (OSH) to students before they enter the job market.

Department of Occupational Safety and Health (Dosh) Sarawak director Dr Nor Halim Hasan said the programme also encouraged them to become skilled workers.

He pointed out that the Human Resources Ministry’s Occupational Safety and Health Master Plan (OSHMP) 2020 aims to reduce the rate of accidents and diseases at workplace.

This OSH@TVET programme is part of master plan under OSH partnership and network, and equipping prospective workers with OSH knowledge,” he added when officiating at OSH@TVET Programme 2018 organised by Dosh Sibu branch and Sibu Vocational College at Sibu Vocational College yesterday.

Nor Halim said students could venture into occupational safety and health after completing their studies.

Citing the nationwide statistics for 2017, he said there were 116 cases of workplace accidents daily, equivalent to 42,513 cases a year with two fatalities daily at workplace or 711 cases a year, adding that accidents brought suffering and loss to workers, their families, employers and the nation.

Through OSHMP 2020 the government hoped to reduce the rate of workplace accidents to 2.53 per 1,000 workers and workplace fatality rate to 4.36 per 100,000 workers, he said.

Sibu Vocational College director Musthafa Sepawi also spoke at the function which was attended by Sibu Vocational College deputy director (academic support) Bolhan Aleh, Dosh Sibu chief Calvin Chin, Electric and Electronic Department chief Yong Jitt Weng and Sarawak Energy Bhd (SEB) Corporate HSSE senior manager Effendy Syaiful Abdullah.
