KOTA SAMARAHAN: Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) yesterday launched the Faculty of Built Environment (FBE), and declared open the Central Unimas Building for Educators (The CUBE) at CTF 1 Lecture Hall, Unimas West Campus.

The event was co-organised by the Faculty of Built Environment (FBE) and the Development Office.

Speaking at the launch, Unimas Vice Chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Mohamad Kadim Saudi said that the establishment of their 10th faculty means that local youths can pursue their interest in built environment here instead of going elsewhere.

“It is hoped that through the establishment of the FBE, we could provide guidance for sustainable development of the communities in a way that conserves Sarawak’s phenomenal biodiverse environment,” he said in his speech.

Chairman of Unimas Board of Directors Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Sulong Matjeraie officiated at both events.

Also present were the university’s vice chancellor (Research and Innovation) Prof Wan Hashim Wan Ibrahim, vice chancellor (Academic and International) Prof Dr Fasihuddin Badruddin Ahmad, Unimas registrar Henry Tening Sengang, and FBE dean Prof Ar Nurakmal Abdullah Goh.

FBE currently has 57 undergraduates enrolled in the three-year Bachelor of Science in Architecture (Hons) course equivalent to Board of Architects Malaysia Part I qualification, and four-year Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (Hons) programme developed in line with IR 4.0.

Both programmes have received provisional accreditation by MQA. Additional programmes under planning and development include Bachelor of Landscape Architecture and Master in Built Environment (Design, Construction and Management).

Sulong also officiated at The CUBE, a 2,574-square metre educational facility providing offices and supporting space for 199 lecturers on three levels with an attractive interior courtyard and design.

The CUBE currently houses the administration office of FBE and its  administrative staff.
