MIRI: Schools are encouraged to hold debates to help students build self- confidence and public speaking skills.
According to Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni, debates also give students a platform to voice out their views in an ethical and disciplined manner.
“Students will be our leaders in the future and continue developing our nation. They will become our voice in parliament and the state assembly as well,” he said at SMK Taman Tunku Perdana Uniformed Bodies Programme on Saturday.
Lukanisman wants students to use debates to strengthen their communication skill to present and share ideas with teachers, even if such ideas differ from their teachers.
SMK Taman Tunku has nine uniform bodies with some 1,040 student members.
“This is a huge number for a school and I am sure it is not easy to guide the students towards achieving the best result.
“Please use these uniform bodies to instil self-confidence and love among the school community by promoting collaboration between teachers and students.
“A uniform body is a platform to boost self-confidence and competency, in line with the government’s effort to have a community with positive values within and outside the school,” he pointed out.
In his address, he also advised students to balance their academic studies and co-curriculum activities to become skilful and disciplined adults.
At the function, he announced an allocation of RM20,000 for the school to carry out various activities and programmes.
Also present were the principal of SMK Taman Tunku Tang Cheng Mun and the event organising chairman Noorlisyam Ghazali.
