KUCHING: Is Malaysia trying to send a negative message to the young generation that it is all right to beat their mothers, asked National Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) vice women chief Voon Shiak Ni yesterday.

Voon was reacting to a question in the Sept/Oct 2018 model examination paper for the Form Five Islamic Studies subject.

The question, which sparked controversies recently, wanted students to ponder permissible ways to ‘hit a disobedient wife’.

“It is indeed shocking to see this kind of question posed to our children in their examination papers.

“This is really unhealthy. Are we sending the negative message to our children that beating their mothers is okay?” she told The Borneo Post.
Voon asserted that posing such a question “is really unacceptable”.

She said every Malaysian, let alone examiners and educators, should be promoting peace and love in a family.

“And this is also a very sexist question, degrading and discriminating against women,” she lamented.

As such, she said Minister of Education Dr Maszlee Malik should offer some explanation and also conduct an investigation into the matter recently raised in a Twitter post by litigation lawyer Siti Kasim.

In the tweet, Siti asked: “Is this what our Malay children (are) learning in school? What is this Dr Maszlee Malik? Is this acceptable? What kind of trash are we teaching the kids in school?”

The controversial question, presented in the form of a flowchart, comes with a header that reads ‘Cara memukul isteri yang nusyuz’ (Ways to hit a disobedient wife).

It carries three separate boxes under the header, with two of them filled and one left blank.

The two boxes state – ‘Not too overboard that it would cause injury’ and ‘Not on sensitive areas’ and the last one requires students to fill in their own permissible way.
