Melanau, Chinese teams share community golf honours

KUCHING: The Melanau Community and the Chinese Community were crowned as the new team gross and team nett champions of the Sarawak Inter Community Golf Tan Sri William Mawan’s Challenge Trophy at Kelab Golf Sarawak (KGS) in Petra Jaya yesterday.

Led by captain Bajuri Jauji, the Melanau team claimed the gross title for the second time after they returned the score of 850 strokes to beat the Malay Community by 10 strokes while the Chinese Community finished third with 868 strokes.

However, in the team nett category, the Chinese Community were victorious after posting a total score of 1,145 strokes, followed by the Malay Community with 1,165 strokes and the Iban Community with 1,175 strokes.

It was also the second time that the Chinese Community have won the team nett title after clinching it in 2016.

The best gross individual performer for the various communities were Nazrul Iman Nasaruddin of Malay community with a 76, Stephen Mau of Iban Community with 85, Hadi Aris of Melanau Community with 74, Michael Lee of Chinese Community with 77, Chan Hong Chang of Orang Ulu with 78 and Ricky Nyowib of the Bidayuh with a 89.

The winners for the best nett individual community category were Mohd Nasir Husain (69) of the Malay Community, Luqman Nul Hakim (69) of the Iban Community, Bajuri Jaujie (73) of the Melanau Community, Chan Pak Seng (70) of the Chinese Community, Ricky Riji Ribuh (71) of the Orang Ulu Community and Andrew Ngisun (89) of the Bidayuh Community.

Hadi Aris claimed the gross individual title at the Matang and Santubong Nines by returning a score of 74, followed by Ramzee Manai (75) and Nazrul Iman Nasaruddin (76).

The winners of the individual nett category played at the Siol and Demak Nines were Luqman Nul Hakim (69), Mohd Nasir Husain (69 OCB), Chan Pak Seng (70), Ferdinand Janting (71 OCB), Ricky Ribuh (71 OCB) and Kadong Luhat (71).

Defison Jelema collected 40 stableford points to win the Invited Guests Men’s title, followed by Kevin Kuin with 38 points OCB over Abdullah Saidol (38). Meanwhile, Marana Mohd Sanari scored 78 strokes to lift the Invited Guests Women’s Nett tile and a stroke further in second place was Pauline Gan while Noor Afrina Ibrahim posted a 93 for the gross title. Event patron Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom gave away the main prizes.
