SMK Chung Hua Miri teams all set for World Robotic Olympiad 2018

MIRI: The representatives from SMK Chung Hua Miri are all set to represent Malaysia in the World Robotic Olympiad (WRO) 2018, taking place in Chiang Mai, Thailand this Nov 16 to 18.

Four teams from the school made the cut for the international event after bagging two gold, one silver and one bronze medals at the National Robotics 2018 competition held at Bukit Gambang Resort City in Pahang, which ran from Sept 11 to 13.

The two teams comprising Jaxon Moh, Voon Yi Han, Jonathan Ho, Kuan Xian Hao, Donald Augustine Tan, and Jonathan Voon clinched the gold and silver medals in the ‘Gen 2 Football’ category.

The trio of Koo Jin Chu, Moses Lau and Sim Fong Chen competed as a team in Regular Upper Secondary category and won, whilst Yong Vin Cent, Chai Hong Jie and Fong Fwu Chrng finished with a bronze medal in the Regular Lower Secondary category.

“We are proud of our students and are praying for their success in the upcoming challenge,” said SMK Chung Hua Miri principal Albert Ong Ngee Hong in a press statement yesterday.

The WRO theme for this year is ‘Food Matters’ and as such, contestants must focus on designs based around food including the aspects of growing, sharing and consuming food.

In the Senior Challenge category, each team must make a robot that can bring different kinds of food to the right destinations, via appropriate media.

In the Gen2 Football category, it encourages innovation and develops creativity as well as problem-solving skills in students. This category involves multiple curricular subjects, as well as applications of the knowledge of science, technology, engineering, maths and computer programming.
