IPOH: An unemployed man was sentenced to death by hanging by the High Court here yesterday after he was found guilty of murdering his girlfriend about two years ago.

Judge Datuk Che Ruzima Ghazali handed down the sentence on N Sanderasegaran, 30, after finding that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubts against the prosecution’s case.

Sanderasegaran was charged with murdering S. Durga Devi, then 17, at a house in Kampung Batu Besi, Ladang Sengat, Simpang Pulai between 11 pm on Feb 27, 2016 and 6 am the following day.

The charge, under Section 302 of the Penal Code, provides the death sentence upon conviction.

In the judgment, Che Ruzima said Sanderasegaran’s defence that the victim was killed during a robbery at her house was merely fictitious and an after thought.

He said the robbery incident was fictitious based on the 37 injury marks found on the victim’s body, while Sanderasegaran only sustained slight injury on the hand, and the jewellery worn by the victim were not stolen.

A robber normally does not stay long to inflict such injuries on the victim, but to flee as fast as possible from the scene to avoid being caught, he added. — Bernama
