SIBU: The state of drug-related crimes in Sibu is relatively not very serious, Sibu police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit said yesterday.

He said statistics showed that Sibu is “very much better” if compared to towns like Kuching and Miri.

“We have yet to score major drug seizures under Section 39B of Dangerous Drugs Act, 1952 so far but those whom we had arrested were mainly found with small amount of drugs in their possession.

“The drugs are brought in from places outside Sibu, for example from West Malaysia and Indonesia,” he said.

He disclosed this in his speech at a dialogue between him and legislators from the Democratic Action Party (DAP) at the Sibu Police Headquarters in Abang Haji Openg Road here.

The legislators are Pelawan assemblyman David Wong, Bukit Assek assemblywoman Irene Chang, Lanang MP Alice Lau and Sibu MP Oscar Ling.

Stanley also revealed that 784 cases with 853 arrests for various offences under Dangerous Drugs Act were recorded in Sibu between January and September this year.

“In the corresponding period last year, 824 cases with 920 arrests were recorded.

“Everyone arrested by our Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department was taken for urine tests.

“Quite a number of them were involved in drug-related offences,” he said.

House break-in, vehicle theft, cyber gambling and police patrol were among the other subjects raised at the dialogue.
