124 senior golfers in action at KGS this weekend

KUCHING: One hundred and twenty-four golfers from 17 clubs and teams throughout the country and Brunei will be competing in the 25th Sarawak Senior Amateur Open Golf Championship to vie for the Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam Challenge Trophy at Kelab Golf Sarawak (KGS) this weekend.

The clubs and teams are Kelab Rahman Putra Malaysia, Impian Golf & Country Club, Samarahan Country Club, Borneo Golf & Country Club, Sabah Golf & Country Club, Damai Golf & Country Club, Kelab Golf Sibu, Kelab Golf Miri, Kelab Golf Bintulu, Kinabalu Golf Club, Sandakan Golf & Country Club, Sutera Harbour Golf & Country Club, Keningau Golf & Country Club, Royal Brunei Golf & Country Club, Palm Villa Golf & Country Club, Malaysian Golf Association, Senior Golfers Society of Sarawak (SGSS)/Kelab Golf Sarawak.

“This is the most participated seniors golf tournament in Sarawak and organised by SGSS with the main objective of keeping senior golfers active in the game,” said organising chairman Anthony Tan.

Tan, who is also SGSS club captain, relayed SGSS’ gratitude to former deputy chief minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam for sponsoring the challenge trophy and the two-day event.

“This is the first year that Tan Sri is sponsoring the event and challenge trophy formerly known as Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Wong Soon Kai Challenge Trophy,” he said.

Among the senior golfers are four who are over 80 with 85-year-old Andrew Teng Tung Kong from KGS as the most senior.

The competition is divided into three age categories: 55-65, 66-75, 76 and above.

“We are offering a Hole-In-One prize of RM15,000 for the feat at any of the par 3 holes. On top of that, there will be a Callaway XR Steelhead NSPro Iron set for Hole 3 and Fourteen TC788 Iron Set for Hole 17,sponsored by Transview Golf,” Tan added.

There are also many lucky draw prizes to be won, including complimentary stay vouchers at the Waterfront Hotel Kuching.
