MIRI: The formation of the Sarawak government following the next state election, which is likely to be called in 2021, will be the main theme of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak’s convention next month.

The event – the first to be held by DAP Sarawak as a component of the present federal ruling coalition Pakatan Harapan (PH) – is scheduled to take place in Kuching this Nov 4.

According to DAP Sarawak secretary Senator Alan Ling, the theme for this year’s convention is straightforward.

“It is only normal for us to aim higher as we want to be able to implement better policies to benefit Sarawakians – PH Sarawak could only bring real changes once it is elected as the state government,” he said in a statement yesterday, stressing that Sarawak ‘urgently needed’ a new government that could provide reforms slated for transparent governance and also for ‘equitably managing’ its resources.

“One example of PH’s sincerity is the quick and determined efforts in the proposed amendment to Article 1 (2) of the federal constitution seeking to restore the rightful status of Sabah and Sarawak and paving the way for the autonomous rights to be returned to Sabah and Sarawak,” he said.

It is learnt that Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng, who is also DAP secretary-general, would officiate at the opening ceremony of the upcoming convention, set to be held at Crowne Square in Kuching where over 100 delegates would elect the new executive committee of DAP Sarawak.

At present, Deputy Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Chong Chieng Jen is DAP Sarawak chairman – he is also the current PH Sarawak chairman.

The PH coalition comprises DAP, Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Parti Amanah Negara and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).
